Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigns

Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that the embattled president Hosni Mubarak has stepped down after 17 days of protests calling for his ouster. Suleiman also said that the supreme commander of the Egyptian army will now be the de facto leader of Egypt.

Demonstrators in Cairo’s Tahrir Square broke out in cheers as the announcement was made on Egyptian State television. “The people made Mubarak resign,” they shouted.

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei has said that “this is the most beautiful day in my life.”

Egyptian media reported that Mubarak had taken his family and left Cairo. He is now possibly in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Quotes and Sayings

About the Region, Islam and cultural totalitarianism...

Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realise that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events…Always remember, however sure you are that you could easily win, that there would not be a war if the other man did not think he also had a chance.

    — Winston Churchill, Chapter 18 (With Buller To The Cape), p. 246
